A musical-comedy with heart by a group of guys from the University of Colorado Denver, this story follows Dave, a shy, good-natured fellow who can't bring himself to confess the love he has for his best friend, Lily. But when she dons a feather in her hair and joins a group of hipsters, Dave must embrace his inner irony to try one last time to captivate the girl he loves. Dave is now at odds with the maniacally-sarcastic Salinger and his hipster henchmen. He is at odds with Lily's lust for hipster stuff. But, most of all, Dave is at odds with himself. And only through song and dance will he muster the courage it takes for a happy ending.
We encourage actors, singers, and dancers of all expertise, creeds, and styles to audition. Whether your background is theater, film, or singing in the shower, we want you to give it a try! Both union and non-union performers are welcome. However, we do ask that those who audition be within the range of 15-30 years of age.
There will be be two unique auditions, both taking place on the University of Colorado at Denver's downtown campus:
May 15, 1pm-7pm: Acting/Singing
Prepare a 1-2 minute monologue of your choice, and roughly 1 minute of a capella singing performance in any style.
May 16, 1pm-7pm: Dancing
You will be taught an original dance over the course of 30 minutes, and perform them in groups of five.
There are five lead roles available, as well as a core group of 16 dancers and a countless number of extras:
Dave
The lead of our film. While initially shy and awkward, he is driven by unrequited love to the aggressive, ironic world of hipsters, only to become valiant and courageous at the very end.Singing, Dancing and Acting involved.
Lily
The love interest. She is confident and spontaneous, but becomes jaded and aloof once the hipsters dig their fixed-gear bikes and cheap beer into her.Singing, Dancing and Acting involved.
Salinger
The raving-mad antagonist! The exaggerated, melodramatic leader of the hipster cult. He is suave and cool to lure in his his prey, but is quickly driven mad by his need to lie outside of society. His moral compass is non-existent, but his singing and dancing and hipster-style are all too prevalent.Singing, Dancing and Acting involved.
Thelonious
Salinger's cronie. He always smokes an elaborate pipe and spews opinions about big government and classic literature. He thinks he's a lot cooler than he is.Dancing and Acting involved, minimal singing.
London
The hipster groupie. With a consistently dull expression and a mind full of expressionistic poetry, she always wants more out of life and tries to get it by not caring about anything. Talk about your trying too hard.Dancing and Acting involved, minimal singing.
Core dancers
Sometimes they're hipsters, sometimes they're "normal" people. They fill out our unique universe and add the all-important musical energy and atmosphere.Dancing involved, minimal singing.
Extras
Adding depth and interest to an otherwise flat landscape, they are necessary to sell our reality. Sometimes they'll be hipsters, and sometimes portray ordinary people. Both speaking and non-speaking roles offered.Acting involved, possibly minimal singing and dancing.
Leads are required to attend both auditions.
Dancers are required to attend only the dancing auditions.
Extras need only attend the singing/acting audition, but are encouraged to attend both.
